Whether you’ve just moved into a new place or you’ve been living in your home for a while, but it’s not really you, there are a number of things you can do to really put your own stamp on your property and ensure that it reflects your personality. Here are five ways you can make your house a home with little effort.

Add some artwork
One of the simplest ways to put a little more of your own personality into your home is by hanging artwork. The great thing about art is that there is always something for everyone! If you choose pieces that truly reflect your style and personality, your guest will feel welcome and take notice. You don’t need to have a huge budget for art either – you can buy prints, reproductions, thrift stores, or even check out your neighbor’s next garage sale to find art that fits your style.
Play with furniture
A lot of people play it safe when it comes to furniture choosing neutral styles and colors when it comes to couches, chairs, and tables. I’m definitely guilty of this… I look around and everything is beige. If you want your home to be different, and to really reflect you, don’t be afraid to play around with color. Buy that bright pink couch or sunflower yellow egg chair and place it in your home with pride. Too scary? I use throws, pillows, and rugs with bright colors and unique patterns to add personality to my home. These are all details that can easily be removed, changed, or toned down as your style and tastes change over time.

Focus on lighting
Lighting can make such a difference to the look and feel of any home. For example, pendant lights and under-cabinet lighting are features you need in your new home. For example, under-cabinet lighting can make the kitchen look warmer and inviting versus a kitchen that only has overhead lights. Chandeliers are another great way to make your bedroom seem more sophisticated or maybe an antique brass lantern can give a more homely touch. Start by thinking about the style you’re trying to convey and choose your lighting sources to match.
Put personal items on display
One of the most effective ways to put your personal stamp on your home is to decorate it with your own personal items. Whether you create a gallery wall from family photos, fill a shelf with souvenirs from your various travels, or drape your couch in blankets you’ve crocheted yourself, using items with personal meaning to you will instantly transform your space. I love photos and I use our walls as a scrapbook of our family travels together!
Ensure it meets your needs
It might not be usual to have a desk in the living room, but if you work from home (which many of us do now) and that’s the comfiest space, then that’s ok! It may also not be usual to have a movie projector in the bedroom, but if you love to snuggle up in bed with a good movie, then there’s no reason why you can’t make the rules. A house that meets your needs instead of a showroom living space and conforming to norms is boring – do what makes you happy. It’s important to make your space your own and enjoy your home the way you really want to!
